Visiting Central Europe can be an easy and convenient vacation when you take a river cruise. From Amsterdam to Budapest, Berlin to Vienna, Paris to Prague, there's a wonderful choice of ships and itineraries to show you fascinating cities as well as beautiful countryside, vineyards and hill top castles. Be enlightened by Europe's history, art and culture - and be pampered aboard today's luxurious river boats.

Discovering Central Europe
While cruise ships call at the sea ports of Europe, you can enjoy a river cruise while discovering Central Europe. The many rivers of the continent were once the centre of commerce and transportation. Towns and villages were built along the river banks and many buildings were designed to face the water. A river cruise gives you a unique perspective on these historic places. It also lets you visit the leading cities of Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Cologne, Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Basel, Strasbourg and many more. Our preferred partners, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and Viking River, offer cruises on the following rivers:

This slower paced mode of travel, away from the noise of traffic, lets you be a part of the charming rural scene. River boats also stop right in the heart of towns and cities - very convenient for exploring places of interest at your leisure.

France by river boat...You can discover France by river boat on sailings with our preferred partners, AMA Waterways, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and Viking River Cruises. These companies offer a selection of cruises on the Seine, Rhône, Saône and Rhine rivers:

Rhine River cruises call at Strasbourg - Discover the capital of the Alsace region and home of the European Parliament. Strasbourg sits on the border of France and Germany and has many points of interest. It is also a good jumping off point for visiting the Alsace wine region.

Back to back and longer sailings

15 or 16-day Grand France sailings combine the Seine, Rhône and Saône cruises mentioned above.

Add Paris to Central European river cruises with a connection between Paris and your river boat by high speed train. Examples are Budapest to Paris, for 19 Days; Prague to Paris for 12 days; Amsterdam to Paris for 12 or 13 days and the ultimate Paris to Istanbul, covering 10 countries in 31 days.

Land extensions - Hotel stays in Paris, the Côte d'Azur and charming Aix-en- Provence let you enjoy more of France before or after your cruise.

Consider the many advantages of river cruising:

Central locations - River boats dock conveniently downtown. Step ashore in the heart of town when you're ready to explore. Cruises from Paris include two overnights on board before you sail so you can visit Paris without having to book a pre-cruise hotel.

Outstanding excursions - Included excursions are a real plus and a major advantage of taking a river cruise. Informative local guides lead complimentary sightseeing tours in each town. Additional excursions are available for purchase. Quietvox headsets ensure tour members can always hear the guide.

English speaking staff & guides - Tour guides and staff speak English on the cruises offered by our preferred partners, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and Viking River Cruises.

Scenic cruising - Relax and enjoy the scenery away from busy highways and traffic noise. River boats feature plenty of picture windows in public areas and open deck space where you can sit back and take in the view. Many staterooms have picture windows while suites have French doors or wall-to-wall panoramic windows.

No motion sickness - Since you aren't on the open sea and river boats are very stable, there's no problem with motion.

Friendly companions - There is a great camaraderie on board these small vessels which in France carry from 132 to 150 passengers. River cruises are known for being very friendly.

Keep in mind that the further north you travel, the sooner the colors peak, so if you are visiting Maine or Canada, then late September or early October are best. If you are going to visit Boston or New York, then the second week of October is usually peak, unless there are several cold fronts early in the fall.

October is spring time in South America. The average daily temperatures are in the upper 60's and low 70's. Buenos Aires is a city with culture and sophistication. Enjoy excellent restaurants, museums, shopping, parks and nightlife. Try to spend three or four days to take it all in, and make sure and take a tango lesson. South America tours 2012 itineraries and dates have just been released. If you don't scuba dive or snorkel, you can also see the reef by helicopter tour, seaplane or glass bottom boat. Now is a also great time to book your Australia tour 2012. There are lots of early booking promotions.

Fall is a popular time for wine festivals in Europe. In Tuscany, it is time to harvest the olives and grapes. Many travelers spend five or six nights in Florence and then take day trips to surrounding areas such as Lucca, Pisa and Montecatini. Also available are three to seven night culinary classes. Stay in historic hotels or villas, shop in local markets and learn to prepare authentic Italian cuisine. More on Italy tours and vacations.

Several river cruise companies like Avalon Waterways and Uniworld have theme cruises in the month of October.

Travelers are realizing that river cruises offer comfort, convenience and variety. The ship is both a hotel and a means of transportation. You don't have to get up early like you do when on a traditional tour or cruise to see the sites. Your ship will be in a new and exciting place every day. Ranging from picturesque villages, breathtaking riverbanks with castles, colorful fields with windmills or vibrant capitals, every day will be a unique experience on your European waterways cruise.

Over the years, we have found that consumers desire more choices when traveling. Cruise lines responded with open dining, tour operators with more leisurely trips, but until recently, the river cruise industry did not offer the choices that seem to attract new clientele. Now the newer river cruise ships with modern decor, larger cabin options and added amenities have helped the river cruise industry experience considerable growth in a short amount of time. In the age of technology, we also find more clients asking for WiFi, which is not available on many of the older ships. You now travel in more style and comfort than with the older riverboats. Staterooms are spacious and most include floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with French balconies. You can enjoy fine linen on your hotel-style beds, flat screen satellite TV and radio, safes, hairdryers and many other amenities that make you feel at home. On many ships you even have the convenience of elevators.

From the time you arrive to your first destination you are escorted, guided and waited on by English speaking staff. Once you unpack you are ready to enjoy your wonderful adventure. From medieval castles, to Monet's Giverny gardens or perhaps Egypt's Mysterious Nile, you will not only be awed by the sights but you will also have qualified tour directors and specialist to guide you during your excursions. Many ships also offer theme departures that provide you with a unique opportunity to experience a destination focusing on its music, food and wine, to enrich your subject knowledge by including expert presentations, special concerts and top chefs.

All meals on board are carefully chosen to give you the variety of the region you are visiting along with many of your favorites. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily. The meal presentation is outstanding as is the service. You can also enjoy the complimentary wine with dinner along with coffee or tea. After dinner you will be pleasantly surprised by the on board entertainment provided by both local entertainers and the crew.

It is small ship cruising at its best. It provides you with the opportunity to experience history, art and culture unhurried and at a relaxed pace. Rather than having to take a bus to see the sites, in most cases you walk right off of the river cruise and you are already in the center of it all.

The Avalon Imagery® introduces a new type of ship to cruising. The navigational bridge is located in the stern, behind the passenger section, allowing for a more spacious and gracious interior design. The lounge and restaurant, located in the front of the vessel, give unimpeded views of the passing landscape. In addition, the Sky Deck is vast for sunning, taking pictures, or simply just relaxing.

Avalon Imagery® features the Silent Drive System (SDS) created to enhance guest experiences. SDS features ship engines located at the stern, separating it from the passenger compartment, allowing for a quieter cruise experience than traditional small ships.

Built in 2006, the Avalon Tapestry® is a new type of ship for river cruising, offered exclusively by Avalon Waterways on the English-speaking market.

Contrary to other vessels on the rivers today, the navigational bridge is located in the stern, behind the passenger section, thereby allowing for more spacious and gracious interior designs. The lounge and restaurant, located in the front of the vessel, give unimpeded views on three sides of the passing river landscape. The Sky Deck is a vast area for sunning, taking your pictures, or just relaxing!

The Avalon Tapestry® provides a complete break from the pressures of every day. The public rooms are elegant, and the dining room is extra spacious. The cuisine and wines on board will surpass your expectations. Pampered by our crew, our guests will make new friends and enjoy the casual camaraderie that leisurely cruising creates. You unpack only once, then enjoy life by lazing on the Sky Deck as timeless landscapes pass before you.

Avalon Tapestry® features the Silent Drive System (SDS) created to enhance guest experiences. SDS features ship engines located at the stern, separating it from the passenger compartment, allowing for a quieter cruise experience than traditional small ships.
